Asia’s best battle for Tahiti spots

The group stage of the 2013 Asia Beach Soccer World Cup Qualifiers, concluded on Thursday with four teams securing their semifinals spots.

UAE, Australia, Japan and Iran are all through to the knockout stage which will be played today at Katara Beach in Doha. The rest of the 16 teams will also be in action today as they will play placement matches for the positions from fifth till last. The placement matches will kick off at 14:00.
UAE will face Iran at 19:00 local time (GMT+3) in the first semifinal, while Japan will face Australia at 20:15.

Fans who will attend the semifinal matches today will get a chance of winning official FC Barcelona shirts signed by Lionel Messi and the rest of the Catalan club’s players.
Two time champions UAE have a very experienced team with a number of players who were among the 2007 and 2008 winning teams, like Rami Mal Messabi and Qambar Mohamed. These players also have the experience of playing in three FIFA Beach Soccer world cups.

The same can be said about their opponents Iran, who might be considered the continent’s best team at the moment. Last summer they clinched the gold medal at the 2012 Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China. They also made regular appearances in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup mostly through finishing third in the qualifiers.
Their squad in Doha includes a number of experienced players who can be a threat to any defense in this tournament, like AhmadZadeh, Moslem Mesigar and Ali Naderi.

In the other semifinal, Japan will be the favorite to make it through to the final as they will be looking for a third straight title. Guided by arguably Asia’s best coach, Ruy Ramos and a number of brilliant players that include Makino, Suzuki and Osmar, the Beach Samurais are a hard team to stop.

But during this tournament they showed a sort of weakness in defense conceding five goals against the brave Lebanese side, and that could be crucial in the knockout stage.

Their opponents Australia proved to be the dark horses of this tournament.
With only one appearance in 2009 in which they were knocked out from the group stage, the Beach Socceroos were not expected to get past the group that included the 2006 Asian Champions and World Cup quarterfinalists Bahrain.

But, as we have seen over the past decade, many Beach Soccer teams were able to improve dramatically in very short periods.
The Aussie squad showed a lot of maturity in this tournament, and with their star striker Pagnaiotis Nikas in an incredible form, they are now one step away from their first ever appearance in the FIFA World Cup finals.

Full crowds are expected in the final two days of the tournament as they will coincide with the weekend in Qatar. The first few days saw a good number of crowds with foreign communities in Doha supporting their teams.
The Qatar 2022 Supreme Organizing Committee and Qatar Football Association, made huge efforts to bring the continental tournament to Doha for the first time since its inception in 2006 and it saw a record participation of 16 teams.

Japan and Iran booked their places in the 2013 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup after reaching the final of the Asian qualifiers in Doha on Friday.

The Japanese went through difficult times against a well organized Australian side, and they waited until the third period to get the lead through the experienced Takeshi Kawaharazuka. The 37-year old played in Japan's oldest player and he played in a number of FIFAWorld Cups in addition to finishing the 2011 Asian Qualifier Tournament as top scorer.

With seven minutes left on the clock, Shinji Makino added another goal for the Beach Samurai Blues. but two minutes late Nikas pulled one back for the Australians to set up a nail-biting final five minutes.

Japan's goalkeeper Shingo Terukina was in great form as he blocked all Aussie attempts including a brilliant header from David Zdrillic to give his team the victory.

The Beach Socceroos were brave but unlucky in this game, and at the end the experience of the Japanese made the difference.

Japan's coach Ruy Ramos admitted that the game was always going to be difficult for his team, "We were not surprised by Australia’s strength because when you reach these stages of the tournament there are no easy teams. My dream is to win, thereby becoming the first manager to win three Asian continental tournaments in a row”.

Iran will be the ultimate test for the Beach Blue Samurais. The West Asian giants never won this tournament, but they clinched gold in the 2012 Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China, and can be considered Asia's top team at the moment.

In the semifinals they defeated two-time champions UAE 3-2 in a hard-fought game. Moslem Mesigar gave them the lead after seven minutes of the first period.

Ali Karim equalized early in the second period, but Hassan Abdollahi replied quickly to restore his team's lead.

Mohamed Ahmedzadeh added another goal for Iran in the third period to give them a 3-1 lead, but five minutes before the final whistle Ali Karim reduced the deficit again with a wonderful bicycle kick.

The "Beach Whites" battled hard in the final minutes but the Iranian experienced defense was up to the task.

After the game, Iran's Brazilian coach Marco Octavio said that his team deserved their place in the final after the hard work the did during the tournament. He also said that the UAE side played a very well game.

The final match will kick off today at 20:15.

Before the final, fans will have the chance to follow a great friendly encounter between European giants FC Barcelona and AC Milan, it will kick off at 19:00.

The third place playoff will also be a good one to watch as Australia and UAE will be battling for the final ticket to Tahiti 2013 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

Entry for all matches is free and there will be a number of FC Barcelona official shirts signed by the first team players including Lionel Messi.

Iran won their first ever Asian Qualifiers title after a 12-goal thriller and a penalty shootout victory over defending champions Japan, while UAE defeated Australia in a tense encounter to snatch the continent's last ticket to Tahiti.

Japan (6)
Iran (6)

Iran won 5-4 on penalties

Iran completed a stunning comeback at Doha’s Katara stadium on Saturday night, coming back from 6-3 down to beat reigning Asian champions Japan 5-4 on penalties.
Both finalists were already assured of a place in September’s World Cup finals in Tahiti, so there was a celebratory atmosphere in the packed stands. And the fans were treated to a memorable contest, providing a thrilling end to a superb tournament.

The match offered a fascinating contrast in styles, pitting Iran’s possession-based game against Japan’s high-octane power plays. And The Nippon’s approach yielded instant dividends, with Ozu scoring straight from the kick off, hammering a volley into the top left corner of the Iranian net.

Two minutes in, Iranian keeper Hosseinilargani tested his opposite number Terukina, forcing a save from long range. Indeed, in the early stages, Japan were generally restricting their opponents to long range efforts until, with five minutes gone, the Japanese keeper was caught out, Abdollahi firing a low effort home with Terukina stranded yards from his goal.
Rejuvenated by their equalizer, the Persians concentrated on holding onto the ball, hemming back their opponents in their own half.

But, with nine minutes gone, Abdollahi received a yellow card a minute later for blocking off Ozu. The tall number 10 made him pay in majestic style, smashing the free kick home to put the Japanese 2-1 up.

With a minute left in the first period, Japan gained a free kick for a handball in the middle of the pitch. Ozu took a huge run up and powered home in emphatic style to complete his hat trick and put Japan 3-1 up going into the first break.

Two minutes into the second period Iran almost reduced the deficit, Ahmadzadeh hitting the right post with a rising drive after cutting in from the left. But the Japanese soon extended their lead, Makino firing in a free kick from close range, which Hosseinilargani could not keep out, despite getting his hands to it.

With eight minutes remaining in the second period the Japanese conceded a handball in a central position.  Morshedizadeh made no mistake, his deft chip offering the Iranians a way back into the game. And, soon after, the Iranian number 7 was instrumental in creating his side’s third, crossing from the left to reduce the deficit to the odd goal in seven.

As the clock ran down on the second segment, Toma won a free kick deep inside his own half from which there seemed little danger. But, the Japanese number 8 smashed home an incredible pitch-length drive to make the score 5-3.

Early in the third period Iran’s keeper produced a flying save to his right, typifying his team’s determined attitude. But, their resolve was further tested five minutes in, when Oda’s scuffed shot looped over the keeper and in, making the score 6-3 to Japan.

With six minutes left the Iranians were handed a lifeline with the award of a penalty. Mokhtari held his nerve to side-foot inside the right hand post, setting up a tense finale. Direct from the restart Ozu almost repeated his spectacular trick from the start of the game, but this time Hosseinilargani managed to divert his shot round the post.

And, seconds later, the Iranians were firmly back in the game, with Akbari delighting Iran’s noisy support by making the score 6-5. Japan appeared to be wobbling as the Persians fought hard for every ball, and Ahmadzadeh almost brought things level with two minutes remaining, his rising drive slamming against the post.

The Iranian persistence paid off in the final minute when Mesigar breaking free on the right before finding the back of the net, to level the score at 6-6 and force the game into extra time.

With 90 seconds remaining, Mokhtari almost scored for Iran with an overhead kick. But, despite their extra period dominance, they could not force a winner, and sudden death penalties beckoned.

With the first nine penalties successfully converted and the tension mounting, Japan’s most experienced player Takeshi Kawaharazuka stepped up for Japan. But, Hosseinilargani was equal to his shot, becoming the hero by ensuring victory at the last to Iran.

UAE (3)
Australia (2)

The last ticket to Tahiti was at stake in Saturday’s third place playoff, with Australia and the UAE coming off narrow one-goal defeats to Japan and Iran respectively in the previous evening’s semi- finals.

On Australia’s National Day, a large and boisterous crowd turned out to support the Beach Socceroos. But, they were quickly silenced, as Karim put the UAE ahead straight from the kick off, with just three seconds on the clock. And, Australia’s misery was compounded less than a minute later when Walid doubled the UAE’s lead.

Australia were without playmaker and former Aberdeen star Zdrilic, serving a one match suspension after being sent off in the dying seconds of Friday’s semi-final. In his absence Aussie captain Nikas, one of the three leading scorers of the tournament, took charge to resurrect his side’s hopes of reaching Tahiti. With seven minutes remaining in the first period, he threaded a long ball through to Matricciani, who did not hesitate, making the score 2-1 heading into the first break.

The UAE were unfazed by the Aussie resurgence and, on return from the break, rifled a series of powerful efforts just wide of the goal, and forced Jaeger to make an impressive save minutes into the period. However, the Beach Socceroos were unlucky not too equalize just before the break, with no one able to capitalize as a loose ball bounced in front of the UAE’s goal.
The score remained 2-1 at the end of the second period.

As the third segment played out, the feisty Australians pushed on in search of a vital equaliser. And their persistence paid off when Matricciani doubled his and his side’s tally, seconds after forcing a corner, to level the scores. But the UAE would not lie down, and re-established their lead through Karim with five minutes remaining.
Australia piled on the pressure, but the Emiratis looked to have held out and, as the horn sounded, their substitutes rushed onto the sand to congratulate their teammates. There were people on the pitch. They thought it was all over. But, in fact, the scoreboard revealed that 0.4 seconds remained on the clock. The referee re-started the game, with Aussie goalkeeper Jaeger preparing for a last throw of the dice. But as his throw-in was arcing goalwards, the final horn was heard. And, controversially, the Aussies would later claim that it was still sounding as George Souris connected with the long throw, powering a header home.

The ‘goal’ prompted the extraordinary sight of both sides rejoicing, but Australian celebrations soon turned to remonstrations as the referee signaled that the goal would not stand. The late drama provided a lively talking point for the large crowd, mesmerized by a high-quality contest that ultimately saw the UAE sneak home 3-2.

Placement Matches

Earlier in the day, Qatar defeated Philippines 8-3, with Abdullah Jassim netting a hattrick, to finish the tournament in 15thplace.
A hattrick from Jalal al Sinani and a brace from Khaled Al Oraimi gave 2011 finalists Oman a 6-3 victory over Palestine and a fifth place finish.

China finished seventh after a 10-5 victory over Lebanon.
The 2006 Champions could only beat Iraq 2-1 to clinch ninth place.

Debutants Thailand finished in 13th place after a 4-3 win over Uzbekistan, while Afghanistan, also in their first ever appearance in the qualifiers finished 11th without needing to play as Saudi Arabia already withdrew from the tournament after the group stage.

The crowds also enjoyed some great Beach Soccer action on the final day as European giants FC Barcelona and AC Milan played out an entertaining friendly. The Catalans won the match 6-2 thanks to a brilliant performance from their captain Amarelle, one of the greatest Beach Soccer players in th history of the sport.

Uruguay coach Óscar Tabárez revealed his final 22-man squad that will face World and European Champions Spain in a friendly match in Doha on February 6th.

The full strength squad included 18 players from the team that won the 2011 Copa America title in Argentina, and 17 from the team that finished fourth in the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in South Africa.
La Celeste’s power is expected to be their attacking force with a front line that includes Edinson Cavani (Napoli), Luis Suarez (Liverpool) and Diego Forlan (Intenacional).

Another player to watch will be Gaston Ramirez, who is making a name for himself in the English Premier League this season with Southampton. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder scored three goals and made four assists, and his effort in what is left for the season will be crucial in helping the Saints to avoid relegation.
Uruguay never defeated Spain in eight previous meetings between the two sides, and a positive result against “La Roja” in Doha can boost the team’s confidence after their recent poor performances in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The match will take place at Khalifa International Stadium in the Qatari capital.
Tickets for the game are available at a number of shopping malls in Doha (City Center – Lagoona Mall – Landmark), and can also be purchased online through this link https://buy2.tickethour.com/qfa2-ww/homePage.html.

All member clubs were also offered the opportunity to visit the Qatar 2022 Legacy Pavilion, which presents the world cup project in much detail.

ECA 5th year anniversary celebration

The gathering in Doha coincides with the association’s 5th anniversary.

During its short existence, ECA has achieved significant progress for European club football and has developed very constructive relationships with fellow stakeholders within the European football family, most notably UEFA. This is highlighted by last year’s signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding between ECA and UEFA.

In his address to the member clubs, ECA Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge congratulated everyone for the successful path the organisation has taken.

“When I look back at our history and at what we have achieved, I find it difficult to believe that we have only been around for 5 years. ECA’s development is remarkable, but we should not rest on our laurels as there are still challenges lying ahead of us. I thank everyone, inside and outside ECA, for the commitment, respect and trust they have shown our organisation” he said.

Future format of European club competitions

In light of the upcoming UEFA Club Competitions Cycle 2015-18, ECA Member Clubs were invited to participate in an internal ECA Survey on the future of both the Champions League and Europa League competitions. 87 member clubs from 36 different national associations responded to the survey, which achieved the following results:
  • 75% expressed their “satisfaction” or “extreme satisfaction” with the current structure/format of UEFA’s club competitions;
  • 92% believe that the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League should continue to exist in parallel;
  • 61% would welcome offering the UEFA Europa League Winner/Finalists direct access to the UEFA Champions League Group Stage.
In summary, the results of the survey clearly show that European clubs are very happy with the current competitions and do not wish to see major changes to their structure/format.

The option whereby the UEFA Europa League Winner/Finalists automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League Group Stage of the new season raised some interest and support provided that the effects on the access list are carefully considered.

Third-Party Ownership
In response to discussions taking place both within UEFA and FIFA in relation to a possible ban of third-party ownership (TPO) of players’ economic rights, ECA invited its member clubs to express their opinion on this very important matter.

The discussion was preceded by presentations from UEFA’s Head of Licensing Andrea Traverso, who outlined UEFA’s position, and Daniel Lorenz Pereira, Legal Director of member club FC Porto.

The debate proved very lively emphasizing the importance of this issue for a number of clubs. It was made clear that TPO is a very complex phenomenon as there are many different aspects to the way it operates. Consequently, there is no unanimity among ECA Members as to whether TPO should be banned or not.

ECA will further assess the merits and impact of TPO on the game and the repercussions of a possible ban. ECA will continue to engage and work alongside UEFA and FIFA on this matter.

ECA Women’s Committee
In view of the growing interest in women’s football over the past few years, the ECA Executive Board decided to create a women’s football committee within the structure of ECA. The aim of this committee is to offer a platform allowing for European women’s club football matters to be discussed and eventually brought up at UEFA/FIFA level.
Furthermore, ECA will aim to develop membership services for ECA member clubs with a women’s section. The committee will be chaired by Jean-Michel Aulas (Olympique Lyonnais) who will keep updated the ECA Executive Board on developments within the committee.
The structure and exact composition of this committee are yet to be defined. The inaugural meeting is scheduled to take place on the occasion of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final to be held in London on the 23rd of May 2013.
Financial Fair Play
An update was given to ECA Members on the Financial Fair Play project. Clubs were reminded of ECA’s support for the new regulations and were told to adhere to the rules which are seen as essential in ensuring the sustainable development of club football.
Furthermore, the clubs were reminded of the upcoming deadlines which need to be respected. These include the need to provide information relating to the overdue payables and the break-even rule by the summer of 2013.
ECA to meet clubs from other confederations for workshop
The 2-day event in Doha concludes on Wednesday with a dedicated workshop for non-European clubs. For the first time, and in response to the positive feedback received from clubs around the world following ECA's achievements, ECA has decided to share its experience/knowledge with clubs from other confederations.

The workshop will be followed by a media conference which will see the ECA Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge sum up the two days in Doha. The media conference will be streamed live on www.ecaeurope.com.

2015 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers
Group D - Matchday 1

18:30 local time (GMT +3)
Jassim bin Hamad Stadium - Al Sadd Club
Doha, Qatar

Qatar vs. Malaysia

Qatar will kick off their 2015 AFC Asian Cup campaign today when they host Malaysia at Jassim bin Hamad stadium in Doha.

It will be Fahd Thani's first official match in charge of Al Annabi. The 39-year-old coach replaced Brail's Paulo Autuori who parted company with Qatar Football Association after the dismal performance of his team in the 2013 Gulf Cup in Bahrain.

He made his debut with the team last week as they defeated Lebanon 1-0 in a friendly thanks to a scond half strike from Al Sadd's Abdul Karim Hassan.

The 19-year-old left winger is one of the players expected to get more chances with Al Annabi after his impresive performances in the league this season. Thani made a number of changes that included replacing a number of experienced players with young and energitic ones.

Al Annabi is expected to easily book a place in Australia 2015 through this group that also includes Bahrain and Yemen, as top the top teams will make it directly to the final, and the third placed team might also have a chance.

Despite high expectations of an comfortable win against Malaysia today, the south east Asian team might not be an easy opponent.

The "Malayan Tigers" achieved good results in recent years, winning the ASEAN Football Championship in 2010 and reaching the semi finals of last year's edition. The AFF Championship is the region's top competition and was formerly known as Tiger Cup.

The players to watch in this squad are midfielder Mohamed Shamsuddin and striker Abdul Hadi Yahya, both are former top scorers of Malaysian Super League, and might cause some trouble for the Annabi defense today.

Doha successflly hosted to a number of top class friendlies in the past few years including a clash between the bitter rivals Brazil and Argentina in 2010 and another game that brought together Brazil and England in 2009.

Both teams announced full-strength dquads fot the match that will kick off at 21:00 local time (GMT +3).

With more than 90 % of the game's tickets sold, a near full crowd is expecte today at the 43,000-capacity Khalifa Stadium.

Yesterday, both teams allowed public to attend their pre-game training sessions and fans from all ages, genders and nationalities turned up at the stadium to cheer their favourite stars.

A "Fan Fiesta" zone was set near the stadium with plenty of entertaining options for the crowds who will attend tonight's game. The stadium gates will be opened to the fans three hours before the kickoff and in order to cope with the expected flood of vheicles an extra parking space have been set up across the main street.

After clinching the 2008 European Championship title, the Spanish team simply dominated the world football, winning their their first ever FIFA World Cup title a couple of years later in South Africa, before successfully retaining their European crown last year.

Most of Vicente Del Bosque's team is made up of FC Barcelona players, and the team's Barca style of play that depends on skilful midfielders with great attacking abilities and short passing has been difficult to beat by the opponents.

The most notable absentees from the team are goalkeeper Iker Cassillas and midfielders Xavi Alonso and Xavi Hernandez, all through injury, in addition to Chelsea striker Fernando Torres who was not picked up by the 62-year-old coach.

The team will see Carles Puyol making his 100th cap for "La Roja", a landmark game for the Barcelona's centre-back.

Another player who will get near his centenary point, is Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos who is expected to make his 99th appearance for Spain also tonight.

For the Uruguayam team, Southampton's Gaston Ramirez will be the only missing big name. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has attracted a lot of attention this year in the Premier League, scoring three goals and making four assists. His effort will be crucial if the "Saints" are going to avoid relegation this year.

La Celeste, the giants of footballing world in the early days of international football, were reborn again during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, as they reached the semifinal stage before settling for fourth place, their best ever result since 1970.

Expereinced coach Oscar Tabarez have a team with one of the most dangerous attacking lines in the world. It includes Serie A current leading scorer Edinson Cavani (Napoli), English Premier League's Luis Suarez (Liverpool) who is currently second on the top scorers' chart, and the experienced Diego Forlan who made a name of himself in Europe and La Liga with Atletico Madrid before joining Internacional of Brazil last year.

Head2Head

In eight previous encounters between Spain and Uruguay, the South American giants never defeated their Spanish rivals.

Only two of these games were official, and both ended in a draw.

Their first meeting came in Final Group stage of the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, when a second half goal from Obdulio Varela earned La Celeste a 2-2 draw and a valubale point as they went on to defeat Sweden in their second game 3-2, before recording one of the most shocking results in the history of football defeating Brazil 2-1 at Maracana in front of 200,000 spectators to clinch their second World Cup title.

The second official game was in the group stage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, back then Oscar Tabarez was in the final days of his first spell with the celeste.Although the game ended in a goalless draw, it ws one of the most entertaining games in this group with both goalkeepers having to make a number of brilliant saves, and Uruguay wasting a penalty in the second half.

The final of the Al Kass U-18 International Cup will take place in Doha on Thursday 7thFebruary 2013. The match will be a fascinating clash of styles as powerful Paris Saint-Germain take on the flair of Fluminense.

The game – to be played at the Aspire Academy – will kick off at 4.30pm and will be broadcasted live on the Al Kass Channel. Entrance for the game will be completely free of charge.
Defending champions PSG will start the game as favorites due to last year’s experience, but they will be wary of the Brazilian team’s pace and ability.

The French team have impressed onlookers with their well-organised and strong side, but they had to rely on a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals to overcome Boca Juniors. In contrast, Fluminense brushed aside Inter Milan 3-1 in a stunning display of samba style play thanks to their attacking verve.

The game will also see two players considered the tournament’s best playing against each other as PSG captain Franck Bambock lines up opposite Flu’s flying forward Robert Kenedy Nunes.

Bambock has been hailed as a star of the future thanks to his mature displays in central midfield as he has lead his team into the final by example.

But Kenedy has caught the eye with his confidence on the ball as he has tormented defenders and contributed goals and assists to his team’s progress.

The two sides played in the opening group stage of the tournament, with PSG running out 2-1 winners.

But Fluminense have improved as the tournament has developed, and many now predict the final will be a close-run affair between the different styles of the European and South American teams.

A spectacular closing ceremony will follow the final, bringing to a close two weeks of outstanding international football.

The tournament is hosted by The Qatar Football Association, Al Kass Sport Channels and the Aspire Zone Foundation.

In front of more than 40,000 cheerful spectators at Khalifa International Stadium, the World and European champions took the lead after only 15 minutes, when Cesc Fabregas sent a powerful long range effort that found its way to the net thanks to a disastrous mistake from the Uruguayan keeper Fernando Muslera.

But, the 2011 Copa America champions replied in style with a brilliant finish from Christian Rodriguez in the 32nd minute after a perfect through ball from Martin Caceres.

Six minutes into the second half, Substitute Gerard Pique sent a great through ball to Pedro, who made no mistake with a powerful shot past Muslera.
